Classical Pilates Benefits: Running

Runners love to run and believe that there is nothing else they need to do to help them feel that freedom and joy they feel whilst running. Runners however can't run their best without a strong core or powerhouse to use Pilates terminology (the abdominal muscles, lower back and muscles of the hips). Powerhouse or core strength is the primary force, which controls the motion in the hips and spine when you run. When there is a weakness a lack of coordination in any of these core muscles there is a tendency to develop less efficient movements, compensatory movement patterns, strain, overuse eventually leading to increased risk of  injury.

By employing Classical Pilates workouts as cross training, the runner will benefit in the following ways:

  • Improves running performance
  • Prolongs running career
  • Improved running efficiency and endurance through an increase in core strength and stability.
  • Increases flexibility and joint range of motion.
  • Restores the body’s natural posture and alignment.
  • Corrects muscular imbalances in the body thus reducing the risk of injury.
  • Builds upper body strength and endurance without adding bulk.
  • Increases stamina and endurance by enforcing proper breathing techniques.
