Classical Pilates Benefits: Racquet Sports

Racquet sports such as tennis, squash and badminton tend to build up strength on one side only depending on which hand the racquet is held in, this results in the dominant side becoming stronger than the other side bringing with it muscular imbalances which can lead to pain and ultimately injury. These sports also have a lot in common with football where there are quick direction changes, sudden stops and then starts, lots of reaching and bending in order to get to the ball.

A player who lacks flexibility, strength in the core, strong hip and shoulder stabiliser muscles and poor alignment of the lower limbs will not move with the smoothness and efficiency of someone who possesses all of the above attributes.

Pilates works at all times to strengthen the muscles of the powerhouse (all abdominal muscles, shoulder stabilisers, pelvic floor muscles, the muscles of the hip and inner thighs,buttocks , hip adductors, hip abductors, hip flexors and extensors) while at the same time working to improve flexibility and alignment thus bringing the body into a more balanced state where one side isn’t dominant.
